The Elusive Samurai (Japanese: 逃げ上手の若君, Hepburn: Nige Jōzu no Wakagimi, lit. “The Young Lord Who Is Skilled at Escaping”) is a historical manga series from Japan. It’s written and drawn by Yusei Matsui. The manga began in Weekly Shōnen Jump on January 25, 2021. So far, 15 volumes have been released, with the first one out on July 2, 2021.

In North America, Viz Media has the English license for the manga. They release chapters digitally as they come out in Japan on their Shonen Jump website. They started publishing volumes in Q2 of 2022. Shueisha also releases the series in English and Spanish for free on the Manga Plus platform. In France, Kana has the license for the manga. By May 2022, it had over 1 million copies in circulation, and by April 2023, over 1.5 million copies.

In June 2021, The Elusive Samurai was nominated for the seventh Next Manga Award in the Best Printed Manga category. It placed sixth out of 50 nominees. It also ranked eighth on the Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics of 2022. The manga won the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2024.

Anthony Gramuglia of Comic Book Resources praised the series, saying it’s one of the highlights of Weekly Shōnen Jump’s newer titles. He noted its emotional depth and intense storytelling. Also, there is an anime adaptation of The Elusive Samurai by CloverWorks is scheduled to premiere in July 2024.
